“Delivering public goods”
For John Gilliland, the dairy sector in Europe delivers multiple public goods. He believes that the
key benef it that dairy farmers produce is highly nutritious food for improving human health, that
is number one public benef it. The second is soil health.
John explains ‘much is talked about emissions, little is talked about the fact that farmers have a
landscape of plants that capture carbon, photosynthesize and lock up much of that carbon’.
The third public goods is that Dairy farmers are prof itable and are the engine in rural economies.
John is also convinced that it is crucial to be able to measure these benef its if farmers want to
know the progress they make and make it known.

“Global Youth for #SustainableLivestockTransformation”
For Paolo Medei, youth are not just the future, they are the change our agrifood systems need today. He
believes that with the right support, young farmers bring vision, innovation, and energy to build more
sustainable livestock systems. Paolo explains ‘ When young people thrive, agrifood systems thrive too.
Let’s continue to empower the next generation of farmers – because shaping the future starts with
them!’. Paolo is involved in the Global Youth Network on sustainable livestock transformation, a youth-led
initiative that aims to foster a collaborative and supportive environment for youth in the livestock sector,
enhancing information and knowledge sharing. The network enables members to:
(i)share events, opportunities, and information related to youth in the livestock sector;
(ii)exchange ideas and experiences, fostering a rich dialogue and mutual learning; and
(iii)broadcast their achievements and milestones.
